This is not a course, it is an addition to the level 1 and 2 curriculum.

The Hybrid Class

The main objective of the hybrid class is provide a chance for Level 1 and 2 students to train and learn together.

If a student is not challenged mentally or inspired to learn, training can become mundane and can often result in the classic roller coaster pattern of intermittent training (ie train for 3 months - take a month off, train for a month - take three months off...). To really understand how MuayThai can benefit your life you must continue to learn new things and practice all the ideals of the tradition - respect, humility, and dedication.

What is a hybrid class?

This class requires a little more focus and an open mind to learning technique. A hybrid class is a mixture of Level 1 and Level 2 students brought together to learn medium-to-advanced MuayThai and Western Boxing techniques (primarily MuayThai). A Level 1 student can learn things in this class that can be used to make their regular Level 1 class more interesting; a Level 2 student will be allowed to do advanced techniques, giving them a real opportunity to implement concepts of Muay Thai.

What kind of things would I Iearn in a hybrid class?

As with all of our classes, just about every hybrid class is different, but still follows a high-level learning plan to make sure all techniques are covered. It's beneficial to come to as many consecutive hybrid classes as you can because we progressively build skill sets from week to week. This class is designed to give students the opportunity to learn new things and improve current skills - foot work, defense skills, offensive skills, tactics, push kicks, knees, punching, cut kicks etc.

The Following is a very general outline that most classes will follow. The format of class is generally about 50% skill building drills and 50% conditioning.
  • 5 - 10 minutes - Warm up (usually based in cardiovascular exercise)
  • 20 minutes - Punching technique and defensive drills
  • 15 minutes - Knee techniques
  • 25 - 30 minutes - Conditioning

What level of fitness is required?

As with all of our classes, you start where you are and move forward from there.

Ideally, the more you attend the hybrid class, the more challenging it becomes. Why? Because you are getting better at technique and will be able to do things faster and harder as time goes on. This becomes apparent when you look around during class and every Level 2 student is completely exhausted and drenched in sweat and newer people to the class are hardly breathing heavily!

There is a different mind set in this class - the Level 2 students bring a level of seriousness to the training and lead the classes by setting the bar. Every Level 2 student should show mental toughness, how to utilize speed, and how to implement power.

What level of skill is required?

A Level 1 student with 6+ months experience in Level 1 classes will adapt well to this class; a new Level 1 with less than 6 months experience will do fine too, but should try to attend with a partner of his or her own skill level until they have the basics down in level 1. This is helpful, but not mandatory in order to attend the hybrid class.

What equipment do I need?

Gloves are needed for this class. All other equipment is optional but would be very beneficial if you brought it as it would give the instructor a broader spectrum of drills to run.

Who can attend?

This class is for  Level 1 and Level 2 students. This is a great class if you are interested in learning proper MuayThai technique.

Rules and differences from a Level 1 class

  • Lateness - 50 push-ups or 100 squats at the front of class -  We intentionally scheduled this class at the later time slot to reduce factors such as traffic, work, etc. If you are serious about learning MuayThai then you should be planning your training into your day. Being on time shows that you are respectful and dedicated. I also strongly recommend that you start thinking about and visualizing your workout 1 hour before you get to class - to excel at something mental preparation should be part of the routine.

  • Discipline will be stressed more in this class than in a regular Level 1 class. For example, in Level 1 we rarely comment or penalize students for taking longer breaks, not padding up in time, or talking while the instructor is speaking. In this class, because you will be learning more new technique, time is of the essence and we have to keep the class running efficiently. The instructor will have students do sit-ups, squats, or push-ups if any of those things start to happen.

  • More Equipment Used - In Level 1 we rarely use belly pads, focus mitts, and shin guards. In a hybrid class the drills may incorporate some or all of this equipment in any given class.
  • Partnering will be based on skill. We will pair you up with someone approximately equal to your skill level.
  • Level 2s will be given the opportunity to sign in first (on the top of the sign in sheet). Level 1s must sign in at the bottom

Freedom of Choice

This class is similar to what we currently do if a Level 1 student wants to try a Level 2 class, if you do not feel comfortable with the drill being done, you can work on something else. It would be strongly recommended to bring a partner of similar mindset if you do not like using the belly pad (for example). This will allow you and your partner to work on something else (which the instructor will assign to you). If you do not have a like-minded partner and the group is doing belly pad drills or something you are uncomfortable with, you are welcome to work on the bag, with weights, or doing ab routines which we will have available.
